Keeping a Chinchilla and a rat in the same cage?
Would that be a bad idea and why?
Yes. They have completely different dietary needs and it would not allow them to be fed healthy diets. They have different needs for housing and use different toys, hideys, etc. They would fight, and they could both SERIOUSLY injure each other. It could easily result in the the death of one of the animals.
